Browser-based immersive WebVR experience for audiovisual storytelling
Overview
Lockdown is an interactive music video created for Spacebarman's song "Lockdown", developed during the global COVID-19 pandemic of 2020. The project explores themes of isolation and connection through an immersive audiovisual experience, using virtual space as both medium and metaphor.
The work represents a Web-first approach to immersive and interactive music visualization, combining VR technologies with artistic expression to create an experience that is emotional, embodied, and accessible.
Role
Concept, system design, interaction design, and technical implementation
Interaction & Experience
The experience places the viewer inside a virtual environment where music, visuals, and spatial composition unfold together as a single narrative. Interaction is intentionally minimal, focusing on presence, mood, and embodied perception rather than explicit controls or gameplay.
Rather than positioning the viewer as a passive spectator, the project invites an active, situated engagement with sound and space, reinforcing the emotional themes of the work.
Technical Approach (High Level)
Built using earlier WebVR technologies
Fully browser-based delivery for accessibility
Designed to adapt between desktop viewing and full VR immersion (e.g. Oculus Quest)
Context & Intent
Created during the pandemic, Lockdown reflects the cultural moment of 2020, using immersive technology to explore emotional distance, confinement, and mediated connection. The project demonstrates how VR can function as a medium for musical storytelling and emotional expression, rather than spectacle or technical novelty.
